What WebP is
WebP is an image format created by Google for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression and transparency, and is usually noticeably smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality. All modern browsers display it.
Which programs open WebP?
- All current browsers — you can always drag a WebP file into Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari to view it.
- Windows 11 Photos and macOS Preview in current versions.
- Recent versions of popular editors; older software and some upload forms may not accept it.
Convert WebP to JPG or PNG
- Open the image converter.
- Drop one or many .webp files.
- Choose JPG for photos (smallest, universally accepted) or PNG if you need transparency.
- Download individual files or a ZIP.
The other direction: JPG/PNG to WebP
If you run a website, converting the other way makes pages faster. Pick WebP in the converter or use Compress image with WebP output — read more in optimizing images for websites.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?
Converting to JPG at 90% quality is visually lossless for most images. PNG keeps every pixel but results in larger files.
Why did my transparent WebP get a white background?
JPG does not support transparency. Choose PNG to keep transparent areas.
