Etsy listing photos: a practical guide

On Etsy, buyers scroll through a grid of photos and click the one that catches their eye. Your first photo does most of the selling.

Size and format

  • Etsy recommends images at least 2000 px on the shortest side, so zoom stays sharp.
  • JPG or PNG; keep files reasonably light so pages load fast on phones.
  • Use Resize image to bring photos to a consistent size.

The thumbnail matters most

Search results show a cropped thumbnail of your first photo. Keep the product centred with some space around it, so nothing important is cut off on any screen. After uploading, check the thumbnail on both desktop and the Etsy app.

Which photos to include

  • A clear first photo — styled or on a clean background.
  • Scale: the product in a hand, on a table or next to a familiar object.
  • Details: texture, stitching, materials.
  • Variations: colours or sizes side by side.
  • Packaging, especially for gifts.

White or lifestyle?

Unlike Amazon, Etsy does not require white backgrounds, and warm lifestyle photos often perform well for handmade items. A good mix: one clean photo made in the product photo studio and several styled ones. Keep the same light and colour mood across your shop so it looks like a brand.

Frequently asked questions

Should all my thumbnails look the same?

A consistent style (background, light, framing) makes your shop look professional and recognisable in search results.
