How to make a YouTube thumbnail with a cut-out

The thumbnail decides whether people click. The popular “cut-out” style — a person or object on a bold background — is easy to make once you know the technical rules.

Technical requirements

ParameterValue
Recommended size1280 × 720 px (16:9)
Minimum width640 px
Max file size2 MB
FormatsJPG, PNG, GIF (non-animated)

Create the cut-out style

  1. Take a still frame or a photo with a clear expression.
  2. In Change background pick a bold gradient or upload your own background image.
  3. Set the size to 16:9, add a soft shadow so the subject stands out, and download.
  4. Add text in your design app if needed, then check that the file is 1280 × 720 — use Resize image → YouTube preset.

What makes a thumbnail work

  • One clear focal point: a face with emotion or the key object.
  • High contrast between subject and background.
  • Few words, large letters — thumbnails are often seen tiny on phones.
  • The bottom-right corner shows the video length, so keep important elements away from it.

Frequently asked questions
