Removing backgrounds without uploading photos: how local AI works

Passport photos, family pictures and unreleased products are not something you want on someone else’s server. In-browser AI lets you edit them without sending them anywhere.

How typical online tools work

A classic online background remover sends your photo to a server, processes it on a GPU there and sends back the result. That works, but the photo leaves your device, may be stored for some time, and the service usually limits free use because every image costs server time.

How in-browser AI works

  1. The first time you use the tool, your browser downloads the AI model (tens of megabytes) and caches it.
  2. Your photo is opened directly in the browser tab.
  3. The model runs on your graphics card via WebGPU, or on the processor via WebAssembly when WebGPU is not available.
  4. The result is created in memory and saved straight to your device.

How to check that a tool really works locally

Open the browser’s developer tools (F12) → Network tab, then process a photo. With a local tool you will see the model files being downloaded once, but no upload of your image. You can also load the page, disconnect from the internet and try again — a local tool keeps working.

All tools on this site work this way, including the passport photo maker and the product photo studio.

Frequently asked questions

Is local AI as good as server AI?

For typical photos the quality is comparable. Server tools can run larger models, but local tools allow manual refinement, which often matters more for the final result.

Why is it slower on my laptop?

Without WebGPU, the model runs on the processor. It still works, just slower. Updating the browser often enables WebGPU.
