How to cut out hair and fur cleanly

Loose strands of hair, a fluffy dog or a knitted sweater — fine details are where background removal succeeds or fails. These tips make a visible difference.

Start with the right photo

  • Contrast helps: dark hair against a light wall (or vice versa) is much easier than brown hair against a brown door.
  • Soft, even light avoids deep shadows that the AI may treat as background.
  • Keep the subject in focus — motion blur and soft focus make edges ambiguous.
  • Avoid busy patterns directly behind the head.

Process at high quality

In Remove background, choose Best quality for portraits and pets. It uses a larger model that keeps more fine detail. Use high-resolution originals: details lost by downscaling cannot be recovered.

Refine the edges

  1. Click Refine on the result and enable “Show removed area” to see what was cut away.
  2. Zoom in with the mouse wheel or +/−.
  3. Use a small, soft Restore brush along the hairline to bring back strands.
  4. Use Erase to remove background patches visible between strands.

Choose a forgiving background

Edges look most natural on a background similar in brightness to the original. A blurred original or a soft gradient in Change background hides small imperfections far better than pure black or white.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I see a coloured fringe around hair?

Semi-transparent strands contain some colour of the old background. Placing the result on a background of similar brightness and colour makes the fringe disappear visually.

Does the model work on pets?

Yes, it handles people, animals and objects. Long fur benefits from the Best quality setting.
